Air operated double diaphragm pumps for corrosive fluids. These displacement pumps are suitable for industrial applications for which the use of pneumatic pumps is necessary (as an alternative to electrical centrifugal pumps). They can be used in explosive areas or in case of high risk of running dry.

Corrosion resistant plastic materials

Selecting the most suitable model for each pump is indeed one of the main skills of Savino Barbera. Our choices have always been focused on the specific use that our industrial products are intended for. In our air-operated double diaphragm pumps, all wetted parts (pump boby, balls, diaphragms) are strictly made of corrosion resistant plastic material and include:

  • Corrosion-resistant plastic materials (PP, PVDF, ECTFE).
  • Metals for specific industrial applications (Aluminum and stainless steel).
  • Mechanically polished AISI 316 stainless steel for food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics applications.
  • Chemically inert gaskets (PTFE, EPDM, FPM, NBR).
  • Acid-resistant diaphragms (made of rubber, thermoplastic, PTFE).

How air-operated double diaphragm pumps work

Basically, air-powered double diaphragm pumps (positive displacement pumps) are driven by a pneumatic
system rather than an electrical motor. So, the liquid transfer is performed without electricity. These AODD
pumps work with a sideways motion created by their diaphragms operating simultaneously in opposite
manners. The compressed air introduced by the pneumatic exchanger (A) behind one of the two diaphragms
generates compression and pushes the product into the delivery duct (B), at the same time the opposing
diaphragm (integral with the common exchanger shaft) creates a vacuum and intakes the fluid (C). Once
the stroke has been completed, the pneumatic exchanger diverts the compressed air behind the opposing
diaphragm and the cycle is reversed. The two diaphragms, linked together, typically achieve the pumping
action “by strokes”: the suction stroke takes place simultaneously with the compression stroke, until the
next cycle begins. Air-operated double diaphragm pumps are generally found to be efficient pumps in
presence of viscous, abrasive, solid-laden, delicate liquids.
